My Courses

Trudi has several options when it comes to studying online from shorter, on demand, self-study courses to longer, instructor led, interactive courses.

At Understand Horses, Trudi has courses on training your horse, starting with planning and motivation leading up to training specific movements using positive reinforcement-based techniques. If you want to brush up your positive reinforcement-based training then these are the courses for you.

At the IAABC Foundation, Trudi’s courses are more behaviour based looking at current knowledge regarding pain and behaviour.

Trudi is currently working on a new course with vet Gabriel Lencioni which looks at cooperative care training for husbandry procedures. The course will be suitable for equine owners, consultants, trainers, vets and other professionals and is due out late in 2023. Understand Horses logo

This is an Instructor-Led Course

Course Description

Would you like to learn how to clicker train your horse? Or refine your clicker training skills?

Whether you would like to start clicker training your horse, train new behaviours or you would like one-on-one coaching to troubleshoot or refine your clicker training skills then this is the course for you.

Equine behaviourist and trainer Trudi Dempsey hosts this unique online coaching course. You will have access to 6 weeks of learning – including 3 training challenges, video lessons, live Zoom sessions, group discussions in a dedicated forum, weekly training tips, downloads, training plans and coaching with individual feedback on your training videos to help you get started and fine tune your clicker training.

I appreciate Trudi’s excellent presentations; well arranged, just enough information at a pace that’s just right, in do-able time blocks, with nearly poetic wording and diction. The graphics make the concepts clear – even concepts I thought I understood before were made more clear to me in the first week of the course. I look forward to each lesson to strengthen my theory and practice.

I enjoyed this course very much! Trudi is a wonderful teacher, and her obvious enjoyment of the subject matter makes the course even better. The lack of pressure and abundance of support made this course achievable and fun! I would take this course and any other course that Trudi conducts over and over. Can’t wait for the next one!

AN INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING HORSES WITH FOOD

Understand Horses logo

This is an On Demand Course

Course Description

Would you like to learn how to train horses with food safely and effectively?

How we handle and train our horses is extremely important, not just for our horse’s welfare but also for the effect that it has on our relationship and our safety. More horse owners and trainers are looking for humane, compassionate methods of training so positive reinforcement (reward-based training) using food is becoming more popular.

This course is an introduction to training horses with food. Trudi discusses the pros and cons of training using food rewards, as well as giving you tips on how to improve your training skills and troubleshoot any problems you may be having.

This course is aspirational as well as inspirational and whilst based on solid science, Trudi has succeeded in making it understandable entertaining and educational. The videos add enormous value and demonstrate the subtle behaviours both we and the horse show each other, thereby introducing increased awareness of self, the horse, environment, and well-being for both. More importantly Trudi gives us the tools to progress with positivity if things go a little awry. Trudi has an innate ability to understand humans and equines working together making her the perfect trainer and presenter for this course I highly recommend this course.

Understand Horses logo

This is an On Demand Course

Course Description

Would you like to learn how to create your own training plan for in-hand or ridden work.

Whether you want to prepare for a competition, go hacking or simply improve your horse’s everyday handling, then planning your training is the key to success. By creating a bespoke step-by-step plan to train your horse you can dramatically improve your riding, in-hand work and everyday handling. Understanding how to create a successful training plan will give you the confidence to make better-informed choices about riding, handling and training.

This course looks at how to create effective training plans, how to implement them successfully and how to stay motivated.

I found this course really inspiring and it has given me a lot of food for thought. I have found in my day-to-day training I can look at the positives, even if small, and I can reflect and see how far we’ve come. For this reason, I have bought a planner and now write down my sessions so I can go back to them in future. I would highly recommend this course for you and your horse’s journey and to open your mind to new possibilities.
